Something Big is Coming
They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.
From the time I was 14 years old, I’ve always had at least one job. I’ve always enjoyed the work I did. Like you, I’ve had my share of tough days, but even then, I came back the next day, determined to fix what bothered me. I’ve always found ways to turn bad days into the next great opportunity. That mentality has kept things fun for me for as long as I can remember.
Throughout my career, I’ve found new ways to reinvent the work I was doing. New ways to help my colleagues be better at doing their work. New ways to ensure customer success. New ways to automate the not-so-fun work so that I can enjoy more of the type of work that is fun. For as long as I can remember, it’s just been fun.
Reinventing the Fun of Work
Io July 7th, 2023, I was laid off. I hadn’t needed to find a job since I was 14 years old. I’d never been let go from a full-time job; I’d always left on my own terms or been recruited by someone that I worked with previously. I didn’t even have a resume or portfolio.
On July 8th, I immediately went into hyper freelance mode while applying to over 80 jobs and half-seriously building a portfolio. I took on a handful of contracts to make ends meet and ended up pulling 80-hour weeks for consecutive months. During this time, the work was still fun, but I started to think that maybe I’d rather find other ways to have fun, while still generating income.
Less Work. More Fun. Something Big is Coming!
The thing that makes work fun for me is helping people. So I thought, “How can I help more people, while doing less work, but still have fun?“ That is when it occurred to me that I could turn fun work into a product.
